The ensemble Barynya (Russian: Барыня), established in the year 1991 in New York City, is a world renowned group that enjoys exalting stature as the premier Russian folk ensemble outside of Russia. Barynya presents Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian, Jewish and Gypsy Roma traditional dancing, music, songs, and virtuoso performances on instruments including the balalaika, garmoshka (Russian folk button accordion), Gypsy guitars, domra and violin. Founder of the group Mikhail Smirnov is hosting all performances by giving a short explanation of every number of the program in English. The ensemble performed at the Russian Winter Festival in the Capital Region in 2009, 2010, 2012. Barynya has been invited to perform at the Festival 2015.
Children's Folk Group "Golden Rooster"
Children's folk group "Golden Rooster" was founded on1997 by russian folk singer and teacher Irina Zagornova. Group of 12 children of various ages sing and dance an extensive repertoire of Russian, Ukranian and Jewish music. The ensemble performed at the Russian Winter Festival in the Capital Region every year from 2009 to 2014. Golden Rooster has been invited to perform at the Festival 2015.
Ballroom Dancing with a Russian Flair
Boris and Sasha Sptitckas are owners/dancers (Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Latham, NY) have their championship-dancing roots from Ukraine. Ballroom dancing is not as culturally widespread in the United States as it is in Russia and other European countries. Ballroom dancing has always been a big part of Russian culture. Dancing in general, including ballet and ballroom, are very popular among men and women in Russia. The dancing might be just for fun, but usually, it is highly-competitive.
